Avelo Airlines to suspend service out of Bradley Int'l Airport

Avelo says its last flight to Cancun will be on Jan. 3 followed by Punta Cana on Jan. 5. The airline's last scheduled flight will be on Jan. 25 to Montego Bay.

Avelo Airlines will suspend service from Bradley International Airport, the Connecticut Airport Authority says.
The authority says it is disappointed and surprised by the news, particularly Avelo's decision to cancel Connecticut's only nonstop service to Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Avelo says its last flight to Cancun will be on Jan. 3 followed by Punta Cana on Jan. 5. The airline's last scheduled flight will be on Jan. 25 to Montego Bay.
People will still be able to fly Avelo out of Tweed Airport in New Haven.
"The CAA is especially disappointed on behalf of the community, which has fought so hard to secure nonstop service to Jamaica over recent years. The decision to cancel the MBJ route is inexplicable, given the strong ridership, subsidies received, significant airport incentives, and community support," said Alisa D. Sisic, of CAA.
The CAA said it was "puzzled why Avelo claims to have been uniquely unsuccessful at BDL despite those significant advantages and the success enjoyed by many other carriers at the airport during the same timeframe."
CAA claims Avelo originally announced it would fly to eight destinations out of Bradley but then quickly canceled its five domestic routes without giving them a chance to mature.
The authority says it is committed to providing nonstop service to Jamaica and has already received interest from other airlines that would like to resume that service.
"It's always disappointing to remove flights; however, multiple business factors make this the best decision for the airline's continued growth. Avelo appreciates the support it has received from its BDL Customers. All Customers impacted by this change have been notified, and we understand the impact this has on them. Those who have bookings on future flights that we intend to cancel will be fully refunded to the original form of their current bookings. Like all business decisions we make, this exit was made based on facts – the revenues on the market did not cover the costs. Any other insinuation to the contrary is unfortunate, false and uninformed," said Courtney Goff, communications manager.
