Officials say four people have been hospitalized after a fire at an apartment building in Freeport.
The fire broke out around 6 a.m. at the apartment building located at 1 Jay Street near Grand Avenue.
Freeport, Baldwin, Merrick, Roosevelt, South Hempstead, Uniondale and Rockville Centre fire departments responded to the scene.
According to fire officials, one person was trapped in a basement apartment bathroom and was pulled unconscious from the scene.
Officials say one person is in critical condition and three suffered serious injuries.
There were a total of 14 units in the building. At least 40 people have been displaced and Red Cross is on the scene at the Freeport Community Center on North Main Street.
Investigators are on the scene to determine the cause.
According to officials, no smoke alarms were heard or located in the building.
The Village of Freeport Building Department has been notified to assess the damage to building and when occupants can reoccupy.
