This is National Teen Driver Safety Week and the perfect time to remind high school students about a state contest that helps raise awareness.
Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for teens 15–18-year-olds in the United States.
The governor just announced the return of the Teen Safe Driving Video Contest, hosted by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles and Travelers.
Connecticut teens and their high schools can win up to $26,000 in prizes.
New Canaan High School students Maggie Marshall and Victoria Fromzel produced award-winning videos in last year's CT DMV-Travelers Teen Safe Driving Video Contest.
Out of 120 entries across the state, these two girls produced two of the best videos.
Students at Wilton High School also produced award-winning videos.
The contest calls on teens to create video public service announcements with compelling messages that motivate their peers to always practice safe driving whenever getting behind the wheel.
The state DMV commissioner says the contest is driving the message home.
"Making sure that kids understand the ramifications when they're being distracted behind the wheel to take it very seriously. Put the phone down Mark and pay attention to the roadways," said DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera.
The videos must also address at least one specific Connecticut teen driving law.
Since the contest began, nearly 5,000 students representing 100 high schools across the state have participated.
The deadline for submissions is Feb. 2, 2026.
