A state police cruiser was stolen, police say, by a suspect in handcuffs.
Troopers initially responded to a crash on the Southern State Parkway near Deer Park Avenue at 5:25 a.m. Friday.
Investigators say 37-year-old John Gibson failed a field sobriety test. He was handcuffed and seatbelted into the back of the police car.
Gibson allegedly slipped the handcuffs to the front of his body, unbuckled himself, climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away.
The police cruiser was found about three miles away on Mathews Avenue in West Babylon.
Police say Gibson was arrested in a nearby cemetery.
He faces multiple charges, including grand larceny, escape, resisting arrest and DWI.
