The National Weather Service continues a rip current statement through later this evening.
Helene to bring a close call with rain and wind this weekend
It has been a gloomy and very humid day Thursday with scattered showers and humidity that is typical for the middle of summer. A stray shower can't be ruled out tonight, but the focus turns to showers and blustery conditions from Helene.
As of Thursday evening, Helene is on the verge of a destructive Category 4 hurricane with 125 mph winds and gusts of over 150 mph. Landfall is expected just before midnight across the Big Bend area of Florida near Tallahassee.
As it moves inland, it will quickly weaken but continue to grow in size, being one of the largest tropical systems in recent memory, near 1,500 miles wide by Friday afternoon.
While the center of the storm will be hundreds of miles away, outer rain bands will move closer to the area through the day Friday.
Scattered showers are likely Friday after 10 p.m. with a few isolated downpours into Saturday morning. It will not be a washout, but the rain will be a bit more intense than the lighter showers of Wednesday and Thursday.
The rain will continue into Saturday with cloudy and gloomy conditions with showers on-and-off most of the day. It will be lighter rain by the afternoon, tapering off by Saturday night.
The wind will also pick up into Saturday, with gusts of 20 to 30 mph likely, mainly at the coast, through the day.
Limit outdoor plans, or move them to Sunday, which is expected to be a mostly dry day.
As the center of Helene eventually reaches the coast on Tuesday, more showers and breezy conditions are possible then.
