Rocky Point's Dominck Carbone wasn't alive in 1986 when Mets relief pitcher Jesse Orosco threw his mitt high into the air to kick off a celebration of the Mets winning the World Series.
But Carbone did a great impression of Orosco on Wednesday when he closed out Coastal Carolina's win over Louisville, sending his team to the College World Series championship series.
"All of us have been dreaming of this since we were kids or in high school," said Dominick as he said in a hotel room in Omaha, Nebraska, the World Series host city.
Carbone is a sophomore relief pitcher for the Chanticleers, which now faces LSU in a best-of-three series for the NCAA championship.
Coastal Carolina will be looking for it's second title in team history.
"We are not the underdogs this year. We're a good team. We came into this tournament with the most wins in the country," said Carbone. "Winning it again would mean the world. It would prove that the trophy we won in 2016 was not a fluke.
Dom and his teammates have the momentum to get it done. They are currently on a 26-game winning streak that started in late April.
"When we go down in a game, as a team we pick each other up. When someone has a bad day, we say, 'Hey, we got you,'" he said.
Carbone says the team is trying to remain humble and enjoy the trip to Omaha. He said it's been cool hearing cheers from people in town. He said a stranger even recognized some of his teammates on the street and offered to pray for their success.
He said it's also cool hearing from people back home on Long Island.
"Teachers from my high school and my buddies. They are all supporting me and it means the world. It's the best feeling ever," he says.
It will feel even better if Coastal Carolina wins the championship this weekend.
