As municipalities across New Jersey deal with extremely cold temperatures, some residents in East Orange say they are experiencing little-to-no heat in their apartments.
The building is located on the 100 block of South Clinton Street. There are about 40 units in the building. Some residents tell News 12 that temperatures in their homes have been below 50 for the last two weeks. They also say that it is hard to use more than one space heater without blowing a circuit.
Tenants say they have contacted West of Hudson Properties, the property manager of the building. A representative for the company has told residents that there is a boiler issue, and they are working to get it fixed.
Residents tell News 12 they asked West of Hudson Properties to put them in touch with the landlord and representatives have told them they don’t even know who the landlord is.
They say city inspectors have been out to take a look at the boiler, but the city is saying that all they can do is fine the property managers.
"The boiler is broke. We have no heat since Jan. 7. We can’t get any answers as to when we will have heat,” said resident Donna Jenkins.
"The little boy has a cold, and his sister has a cold because it’s freezing in here and we have nowhere to go,” said resident Robyn Williams.
A spokesperson for the city issued a statement: "The landlord has been summoned multiple times, and the Department of Code Enforcement has mandated that a temporary boiler be installed immediately.”
Temperatures are supposed to drop below 10 degrees on Tuesday.
