Two dogs are dead and a firefighter was brought to the hospital after a fire broke out at a Plainview home Monday evening, according to police.
The Nassau County fire marshal says it happened around 7:50 p.m. at a home on Eileen Avenue.
Officials say that close to 100 firefighters from six different departments battled the blaze and heavy smoke.
Neighbor Carole Cryer said she noticed firetrucks outside her home and was shocked when she looked out the window.
"At first it was a blaze, an absolute blaze,” she said. “But then pitch-black smoke, pitch black. A huge plume of smoke.”
No other residents were inside the home at the time of the fire. They say the fire was under control in about 30 minutes.
Bethpage Fire Department Chief Francis DeBobes says the fire was mainly in the rear of the home when they got on the scene.
"We had a fire out the rear of the house, the entire rear of the house, and coming out the front door,” he said.
The fire marshal's office is investigating the cause, but says no smoke alarms were in the home at the time of the fire.
