A township-wide boil advisory is in place in Lyndhurst after a water main break.
A total of 6,000 structures are impacted including nearly 25,000 people.
Repairs are expected to be finished by Wednesday morning, but a boil water advisory will be in place until Thursday morning unless water testing results come in sooner.
Police say they were called to the water main break at the intersection of Ridge Road and Valley Brook Road around 4 p.m. Those who live nearby are experiencing little to no water pressure tonight and possibly brown water.
About 10 businesses located near the water main break are still without water. But remained open.
Officials say the water main is about 10 to 12 inches and the infrastructure is about 100 years old, so utility teams have to be very careful.
When it comes to the cause of the water main break, Lt. Paul Haggerty with the Lyndhurst Police Department and Office of Emergency Management told News 12, "We're assuming that the contributing circumstance was the cold weather."
"Of course, the cold weather is going to be a challenge for the workers out here tonight," he said.
Haggerty says area schools are expected to start on time on Wednesday.
Additional information will be released on the free Lyndhurst, NJ OEM mobile app. These push notifications also simulcast on their social pages. Residents may also visit the town's website.
Once the boil advisory is lifted, it will be broadcast immediately.
