An 18-year-old man is claiming innocence in connection to a shooting that resulted in his car being hit by a getaway vehicle.
While receiving treatment for his injuries at the hospital, police arrested him, saying he was involved in a shooting.
The teen, who has no prior criminal record, recently graduated from high school and had plans to become a plumber.
Now, he’s caught up in a shooting in Allerton that he insists he had no part in.
“It was scary, but I’m going to make it through. We’re going to get through,” the teen said.
Praying for his release, the teen was surrounded by more than a dozen family members and friends at the Bronx Hall of Justice.
The young man asked that his name be kept confidential for fear of retaliation, as the shooting is believed to be gang-related.
His father questioned the actions of police.
"The ambulance came and took him to the hospital, and an hour later, the cops showed up to arrest him. I found that pretty bizarre," he said.
The 18-year-old was driving his father’s black van when a gray Honda, fleeing the scene of the shooting, crashed into him.
The teen said items from both vehicles scattered during the crash, including ammunition that landed on his dashboard and a gun found under his van.
“If this was an 80-year-old woman driving that vehicle, no way would they have accused her of having a weapon,” said the teen’s father. “They definitely profiled him because of the way he looks.”
The teen, who was initially treated as a car crash victim, is now facing a range of charges, including possession of a weapon and ammunition.
His father expressed frustration, stating that the DNA evidence for the items recovered has not yet come back.
“The burden of proof is on the city. It’s on those police officers, the detectives, and the D.A. They need to prove they’ve got the right guy. They didn’t,” the father said.
Despite the legal battle, the family remains united in their support of the teen.
“We don’t want to spend any more days in the courthouse. My son has nothing to do with this,” said the father.
“Everything is going to show my innocence,” the teen added.
With unwavering support from his family during Monday's court appearance, the judge decided to remove the teen from supervised release, marking one step closer to proving his innocence and returning to a normal life.
