Middletown police say a 16-year-old has been arrested in connection to last week’s shooting inside a city barbershop that left a 17-year-old wounded.
The suspect, who is not being identified because of his age, was taken into custody Friday in New York City following a multiagency search. Authorities say the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and NYPD assisted in the arrest.
The teen is charged with attempted murder and multiple firearms offenses. Police say he opened fire inside a West Main Street barbershop on Sept. 3 during business hours, striking a 17-year-old victim three times. Customers were inside the shop at the time.
Authorities previously said the victim and shooter knew each other from high school and that the shooting stemmed from a prior disagreement.
The victim has since been released from the hospital and is recovering, according to investigators.
On Saturday, the suspect was arraigned in youth part court and remanded to juvenile detention on $200,000 cash bail, $400,000 partially secured bond, or $800,000 full bond.
“This crime understandably shocked our community, given the extreme violence and reckless nature of discharging a firearm inside a local business. The arrest is the direct result of the collaboration of multiple law enforcement agencies committed to protecting the safety of our residents," said Middletown Police Chief John Ewanciw in a statement.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Middletown Police Detective Division.
