The city of Shelton’s school bus company says recently implemented stop arm cameras are working to cut down on drivers breaking the law.

While the school year has just begun, Shelton Student Transportation Services claims nearly 200 drivers have already been caught on camera illegally passing stopped school buses.

“Watch those red lights because you’re being watched," says Frank Scalzo, director of operations. "It doesn’t discriminate, it gets everybody."

Shelton joined Danbury and Bridgeport this year when it added AI powered school bus safety program, Bus Patrol, to all 68 of the city's buses.

“I know Danbury has put this in the same time we have," Sclazo says, "They’re finding their numbers are astronomical as well."

Drivers face a potential $250 fine for their first offense.

Scalzo says he’s hoping enforcement will lead to compliance.

“Just be responsible like you’re supposed to drive every day," Sclazo says. "Abide by the law - you have to stop when the school bus stops.”
