Video has been released showing a brazen vehicle theft that occurred at a Red Bank gas station around 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 10.
According to the surveillance video taken from the Shell station at the corner of Shrewsbury Avenue and Newman Springs Road, the suspect exits a white BMW X5 with Pennsylvania plates and begins crawling out of sight of the attendant and driver of the black car he is about to steal.
As the driver pays the attendant, the suspect makes his move, getting into the driver's side door. The victim first confronts the suspect, but then quickly backs off when the suspect puts the vehicle into drive. Both the BMW and the stolen car take off and head west on Newman Springs Road toward the Garden State Parkway.
The entire incident happened in less than 30 seconds. The Red Bank police chief says the victim was concerned the suspect had a weapon, which is why he backed off so quickly.
Red Bank police are asking anyone who witnessed the theft to give them a call.
