Police are searching for the person who fatally stabbed 34-year-old Luis Gonzalez on Saturday in East New York.
A makeshift memorial with candles now sits on the sidewalk near the intersection of Sheffield and Glenmore avenues.
“[Gonzalez] was cool,” said one man, who works nearby but did not give his name. “He would pass by and say what’s up.”
Sources told News 12 that the incident happened in the street around 6:45 p.m.
Gonzalez was stabbed in the abdomen and pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Video from the scene showed blood and a baseball hat in the roadway.
Crime tape surrounded a dark Toyota sedan and a pink motorized bike, but it is unclear if the car and scooter were involved.
“There was a bunch of cops here in suits,” the man said. “So, I already knew what was going on.”
The man said he feared retaliation because the area, which is mostly industrial, is full of “different characters.”
“This is not Disneyland,” the man said. “There’s always something going here, but nothing like [the fatal stabbing], nothing violent.”
People in the neighborhood said the street is known for gangs, homeless people, drugs and prostitution.
“You see the prostitutes and stuff,” said the man. “You can tell just by that that you’re not in a good area.”
"It is always happening,” said Pinar Oksuzoglu, who works nearby. “There are a lot of homeless [people] around. I also don’t feel safe to come [to work], to walk to the deli. It’s always happening in this area. Honestly, I’m not surprised.”
It was not immediately clear what the victim was doing in the area and whether or not he knew the attacker.
Police said Gonzalez lived about a half mile from the scene.
