Police say a 28-year-old man was shot and killed by officers in East Flatbush on Sunday after running from them with a gun in his hand.
New video shows the moments after the shooting:
It happened around 9 a.m. after a 27-year-old woman called 911, telling dispatchers the man she knew was harassing her outside her door. She also told police she was in the process of getting a restraining order against him.
According to the NYPD, six officers from the 67th Precinct responded and spotted the man who matched her description. They say he took off running, and officers chased him about a block and a half onto Coventry Road.
Police say he had a loaded revolver in his hand during the chase and was told multiple times to drop it. They say he refused, and an officer fired once, hitting him in the chest.
New video from the scene shows more than half a dozen officers surrounding the man after the shooting. At one point, they are seen lifting him and putting him into the back of a police cruiser. Neighbors say he was on the road for about 25 minutes before being moved and that an ambulance arrived afterward.
One neighbor told News 12 she watched it all unfold.
“I was in my yard, watering my plants and then I heard the cops saying, ‘Drop the gun.’ Then I heard the shot fire. And I saw him fall back,” she said. “My son is 29, and it's taken a toll on me. I don’t know them, but I’m a mother also.”
Friends and former mentors of the man are also reacting. Peter Waterman, his former football coach at Tilden High School, said he was stunned to hear what happened.
“I would see him with his daughter multiple times. We would shout to each other going about his daily life, so this is a shock to me. I don’t think this is within his character to challenge the police with a gun,” Waterman said.
Investigators say the man and the woman who called 911 knew each other. Police also confirmed there were two prior domestic incident reports involving them.
The NYPD says the shooting was captured on body camera, but that footage has not been released. The department’s Force Investigation Division is leading the case.
