Authorities say the bus driver, 62-year-old Wawa Aurelus, did not stay at the scene after the crash. Police later arrested him.

The incident happened around 3:11 p.m. Wednesday  near Ralph Avenue and Beverley Road, outside I.S. 285, also known as the Meyer Levin School.

Investigators say the woman was walking into her building using her walker when a man approached her and offered to help carry it up the stairs.

The break happened on Bragg Street, between Emmons Avenue and Shore Parkway, just after 2:20 a.m., according to city officials. 

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday at 770 Eastern Parkway, a site with deep meaning for the Jewish community.

City leaders say 10 people have died after being found outdoors during this prolonged cold stretch.
