Long Islanders love pizza. We know this and making pies can be fun for the entire family. Our Shannon Lanier learns how at 1653 pizza in Huntington in this week's road trip, close to home, making a pizza from scratch, doesn't just look cool, but it usually tastes great too. So the little Lanier and I came to 1653 pizza company in Huntington for a private lesson on making a pie like a pro. It's definitely an artisanal style of pizza making. Uh So we thought, what better way to get everyone even more excited about it than to start sharing the information that we have. Can we get our hands dirty? Now, let's go. You're gonna start pressing down just like that. You're gonna start picking up your pizza and you're gonna slowly stretch using just your knuckles. What toppings can we use on our pizza? We're going to make the classic Margarita pie, which is gonna be tomatoes and mozzarella. We're also gonna do our Gerard, which is our vodka sauce and our all natural pepperoni. We're gonna start using a circular motion to start spreading the sauce out. You're gonna take your Parmesan cheese, your grated parmesan and start sprinkling it all around. So our next cheese is gonna be our shredded mozzarella and kinda like we did for our sauce. Start from the center and just start spreading it out. Our last cheese is gonna be our buffalo mozzarella little bit at a time. You're just gonna start to slowly spread it all around the pizza. My gerard people, you're gonna add your pepperoni, let it kind of fall out of your hands and spread around like that. All right guys, looks like we're all set. Let's get these pizzas in the oven. All right, squad, we're all set. Wow, that was fast. So our pizza is actually cooked super fast in our oven. It's an imported Italian oven and it burns wood really, really hot from 1653 pizza company where the Lanier family road trip close to the home.

Well, the list of unique offerings in this repurposed mill reads like an A to Z from art to zest and everything in between. In this week's road trip close to home, News 12 photojournalist Laurie Goliath takes us to this hidden gem in Stonington. It's a really cool old building. It's over 100 years old. Well, it was a velvet mill. It was owned by the old American Velvet Company. They wove for some of the best velvet in the world. It's a unique place. There are lots of unique businesses at the Velvet Mill. There's breweries, restaurants, uh, we have bakeries. So we're Zest Fresh Pastry, we have an assortment of bars, we have a ton of cookies, we have things for kids, so fun cake pops, decorated sugar cookies, and then some of the homestyle stuff, your muffins, your coffee cakes. Um, and your classic cookies. We're at Beard Brewing here in Stoneton, Connecticut. You should definitely grab a beer while you're here, take a walk around and see what kind of shops are there, uh, maybe grab some good food, the pizza. I mean, you can get an empanada and get a beer, you know, have a great sit down dinner at White Crest, little tiny restaurant, family owned, a little bit influenced from around the world. Here we are hyper focused on flavor and quality and family and just like good hospitality and a good vibe in a. casual manner. We have our pizzeria next door. We're making sourdough pizza. We bake fresh bread every day here. It's an American pizzeria. It's not like an Italian pizzeria. And the food is amazing. We're here at Doc 9 in the Velvet Mill, and we're the newest restaurant and cocktail bar that's opening up at the mill. A lot of our food is farm to table. We use a lot of local oysters, local clams. There are more than 20 artists in the building. Oh, a few times a year or seasonally we change. the shows. The list is unless it's really, really an impressive spaces ballet so everything is handmade from Bali. We focus on natural material, mostly teak it's all sustainably sourced steak. It's really just a historical pin gem of Stonington and the New England area. Great food, great drink, um, painters, crafters, jewelers, vintage stores. Come and find out. Just walk through. I mean, there's a lot to see and explore. Well, the Velvet Mill is home to over 50 unique shops, studios, and businesses, and it's a must for your road trip bucket list. Well, on today's road trip, it's all about fun at a new arcade in Essex County. Take a look. Hometown arcade in Bloomfield is focused on family friendly gaming. For just $20 you can play as many games as you want. The arcade offers more than 40 classic arcade games, 6 pinball machines, skee ball, air hockey, even modern gaming consoles. The owner says he drew inspiration from the 80s and 90s. Arcades were such a cornerstone of communities in the 80s and 90s, and that kind of went away with the introduction of home gaming and console games at home. More recently, especially after the pandemic, people have been dying to do something in person, so build a community again and interact with each other, and the arcade is a perfect place to do that. Trip close to home. We're learning about the art of glass blowing news. Twelve's Nadia Galindo takes us inside Brooklyn Glass in Gowanus to show us how molten glass is inflated to create one of a kind hand crafted art. It's an art that's been around for centuries and it's something you can learn to do in Gowanus at Brooklyn Glass Show the pipe a little bit. Studio manager Michael Hin gives us a demonstration. First, you get molten glass from the furnace and I'm gonna come over here to the bench, grab one of these wooden tools called the block. Then the work begins and I'm gonna use the jacks. Give this a little Michael shows us how he and another person blow into the glass and shape a bowl. You don't have an exceptionally long working time. It requires several trips to the reheating chamber that's set to 20,100 degrees. Brooklyn Glass partner David Ablon says they offer a variety of classes for everyone from beginners to the more advanced and they will work with an instructor and it's a group of eight or nine people and they'll make something simple that I finally get my chance to get my hands dirty. First, we start by adding some color to the molten glass, pick it up and then we head to the reheating chamber. Is it expanding? Michael says it's a process snip anywhere anywhere you want that becomes easier with experience one hand. He said, once satisfied with the artwork, piece is removed from the glass pipe. When your piece is done, it goes into what's called in at 910 degrees. And it take about 12 hours for it to cool down to room temperature, which means you'll have to come back another day to pick your piece up and go on. I'm not news 12.

Boarding. Cool again. News twelve's Nadia Galindo is taking us there on a road trip close to home to check out Royal Palms. Shuffle Boarding Club. Yes, this is not your grandmother's shuffle Boarding club. No, welcome to Royal Palms in Gowanus where you can slide into this retro game with friends, food and drinks. So these are the biscuit baskets. Jonathan Schnapp started this business more than a decade ago. Out of his love for the game. I used to play Shuffleboard as a kid with my grandparents down in Florida that nostalgia has led to this business. The whole thing is supposed to feel a little bit like vintage Florida. Jonathan shows me how to play the game. The goal is to score the number by landing discs on numbers on the court. It's also good to knock out your opponents diss arm relaxed. Be together. Good little big and push. You can reserve a court by signing up when you walk in or by booking a Cabana. Royal Palms also has its own league where beginners and professionals alike can get in on the action two days a week. Royal Palms is a 21 and over club and what an adult club without a full service. They have everything from beer to cocktails to mocktails. I'm on the clock so I'll have a mocktail. Robin can I have an Angel Earl? It's got pineapple juice. Our custom ginger, black pepper syrup and a little bit of soda water. And the selection of food is always changing. We drive food trucks into the building and we change them out every week. And what's a club without an instagrammable corner? Of course, I'm not leading unless I get a photo. Sure to savor the history of this nostalgic game while gaining perspective on why so many generations have fallen for shuffle boarding on this road trip, close to home in Gowani, Nadia Galino News 12 Brooklyn.

Well, we are getting a sneak peek inside a new family fun center opening soon in Westchester News Times. Nikita Ramos is showing us the spot where kids can play for hours on this road trip. Close to home. It's a safari adventure to a land, not so far away. Actually, it's just a road trip close to home. That'll feel like a fantasy. I was two years old, 1819 20 we especially of all ages. You can have a good time and Walter King is the mother son duo that owns this brand new location of Little Kings and Queens fun place in Courtland Manor. Walk in and play by the hour among dozens of activities set in a scene of a stimulating safari. The youngest explorers tend to flock to the soft playground. That's where they can run wild on a three story jungle gym. Or how about racing? Your friends on your favorite Dino? Maybe you want to channel your inner jumping beam and even nail a jump shot. We're big on just creating an experience locally for the kids to remember for a lifetime. And if you're really in it to win it, challenge your friends at a game of mini golf, maybe interactive bowling or even a twist on paintball. And we're just scratching the surface here because there is so much more than the eye. Can you what this is? This is an immersive theater and it really touches all of your senses, bringing this Jurassic experience to life. There is so much more to explore for yourself where the little ones will truly feel like the king and queen of the jungle. On this road trip close to home, looks like so much fun. Well, for artist Steven Goldstein, a well traveled license plate can be the best way to celebrate the pop culture icons of our time. Here's this week's Made in Connecticut. License plates, they tell us where we are, but in the right hands they come together to show who we are. I work off an image and I manipulate it and then the final template product is what you're seeing here. And that's where it starts for artist Steven Goldstein of Fairfield when he creates his license plate portraits, portraits designed with plates that are personal. Love music so I do a lot of musicians, so you know I'll go out and get their appropriate plates where they were born, where their career took off, maybe a major concert that they had. He works the plates in some fronts, some backs all cut to a template for this portrait of the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia. So right now I'm kind of finishing Jerry's hair. I label everything so I remember because I don't remember where I'm, you know, I sometimes get lost in the piece, which is easy to do because Goldstein then takes the piece apart, paints various sections, and then reassembles it. Where do you get all these license plates? Yeah, I get them from all over, so, uh, I get a lot from eBay. It's where I originally got them from. I still go to eBay to get specific plates. I love the Connecticut, the, the newer Connecticut plates actually because this blue right here is perfect for when I make piece. that have blue eyes. Here's uh a stack of my templates that I've used. Billie Eilish, you know, a little different on this piece you'll see I mostly use the front of the plates, so I didn't do a lot of painting and uh Taylor Hawkins, uh, from the Foo Fighters who passed away, you know, I have the hawk here with my hero in it. And Muhammad Ali, yeah, I love this piece. So, uh, for this piece, uh, we, we saw some of these plates back in my studio. I love the red, uh, for the gloves so that's why I went out and got these Michigan plates, but he was born in Kentucky, so I have Kentucky plates throughout. Goldstein donates a portion of some of his projects to charity. For him, the plates can have a bigger purpose. A lot of uh interesting people that are trying to do good in the world, and I try to that kind of motivates me too as well.
