DRYING OUT THIS EVENING
After yesterday's storms, it was certainly cooler today with more off and on rain showers. There is still a little drizzle to get through this evening, but it is mostly drying out. It will stay mostly cloudy with a slight chance for patchy fog into Friday morning along with lows in the 50s.
DECENT FRIDAY AHEAD
Friday will be dry, but with limited sunshine. Much of the day is mainly cloudy with breaks of sun from time to time. High temperatures will hit the lower to middle 60s and it will be noticeably breezy with an east wind around 10 to 20 mph.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Unfortunately, the holiday weekend still looks very wet - especially to start. Outdoor memorial services or any other plans look wet Saturday through at least midday Sunday. There is still some hope for Monday, but a few scattered showers will still be possible.
Rain showers develop Saturday morning, with steadier rain Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Some of that rain can be heavy, especially early Sunday morning. 1 to 2 inches of rain with locally higher amounts are possible, which is significant and much needed, but just poorly timed rain for Long Island. Expect slower than usual travel if you are trying to get around Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.
DROUGHT UPDATE
This morning's drought update now includes all of Long Island in a moderate drought. This does not take yesterday's rain into consideration. That, along with this weekend's rain, will be included in next Thursday's drought update. There is a chance we see some improvements here following this weekend's rain.
NOAA'S 2026 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST
Believe it or not, we are just about 10 days away from the start of Atlantic Hurricane Season which goes from June through November. The forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was released today and calls for a below average hurricane season with 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes. Hopefully, Long Island is spared from any tropical storms or hurricanes this season, but of course the entire News 12 Storm Watch Team will monitor that closely for you all summer long.
