Bridgeport water main break impacts hospital service, causes school dismissals
Police say a water main break with heavy flooding caused several streets in Bridgeport to partially shut down on Thursday.
The inaccessible street areas are North Washington Avenue and River Street, Knowlton Street and River Street and River Street and Evergreen Street.
Officials at Aquarion Water Company say a 24-inch water main pipe broke on River Street around 3:30 a.m.
The break was quickly isolated, officials say. However, many residents experienced discolored water.
Due to the discolored water, Bridgeport Hospital was forced to cancel certain procedures. Bottled water was also delivered to the hospital.
Aquarion says the break should be repaired and service restored by 5 p.m. Thursday. Once that happens, employees will start flushing the streets.
The company will prioritize the area around the hospital.
Aquarion officials expect the water pressure and service to be 100% for Friday. City officials say River Street should be repaired by the end of the day on Friday.
Luis Munoz Marin Elementary and Beardsley School were dismissed early due to the break. It's not clear yet if the school will open on Friday.
