Kathy Hogle declared a state of emergency for Long Island late last night. And joining us now to talk about the conditions in Suffolk, the county executive Ed Romain. Ed, you've been on top of this, updating everyone about the county and what will happen for the preparations. It seems like we're in a little bit of a lull right now, but we're getting ready for that second high tide that is definitely going to provide a whole lot of water for those coastal communities. Well, we're concerned. About flooding and coastal flooding all over the place, um, out in Orient, uh, even in Montauk, the erosion is something we're worried about, uh, Fire Island, the erosion is something we worry about, uh, high tide, mastic Mastic Beach, very concerning, Lindenhurst, East Patchogue, there are areas that are low lying areas that flood. Uh, right now we have several trees down. Uh, we had a tree down on South Country Road. Um, we had, uh, I'm talking about county roads now because most of the trees that are down are handled by the towns or the villages. So we've had South Country Road, we had Montauk Highway and quag, we had 105 in Riverhead, we had, uh, branches and trees down. So we're worried, we're looking at all. The trees in Mastic, as you pointed out, as your reporter clearly pointed out, there are some wires down. We have about 1900 people without power, and in fact we just brought a generator over to our sewage treatment plant in Masse to make sure that it continues to operate without interruption. So these are concerns. Obviously flooding on the North Shore in communities like Port Jeff or Northport or other areas where all the roads run down to the harbor. uh, this is a concern. The rain has not been as severe as we thought. The wind has backed off for the moment, but we expect it to pick up again. Uh, this is something that is not going to be over till later tonight. Uh, the governor declared a state of emergency in Suffolk County, and I also declared a state of emergency, which makes us eligible for any aid or assistance that we might need in the future. So that's where we are right now, um. What other questions can I, I address that you have? Ed, you got them all. You got them all. You did our job for us. Ed, thank you. We'll check back in. Staying in Suffolk County right now, we're going to get an update from the Brookhaven town Highway superintendent. Dan Le Squadro joins us now. Dan, good morning. Thanks for joining us. As Nicolette mentioned, seen some trees down in Mastic Selden as well. How are the roads out there this morning in Brookhaven? Um, you know, it's just been a steady stream for us overnight. Um, I think everybody in the Brookhaven Highway Department is a little tired this morning. Um, believe it or not, we only had about 2 dozen, uh, calls for trees down in the past 24 hours. Uh, but they've come in steadily across the town. Uh, we're fully expecting that when people wake up this morning, by the light of day, they'll find Um, you know, a bit more damage. Uh, we'll be getting calls throughout the day today. Um, but, you know, I just want to remind everyone, um, as you said, with, uh, power lines being down, always assume a power line is live. Do not go near them, do not touch them. Um, in fact, we have to wait for PSEG to de-energize those lines before my crews can go in and clean those trees. Up if there are wires involved, so very important for people to know. That's definitely good advice. As for the coastal communities, I know that we are in low tide for some of them right now, and there's still water in the streets, so everyone's kind of looking towards that afternoon high tide that may be the worst of this storm. Uh, absolutely. Um, you know, with coastal inundation, there's really nothing, uh, that we can do but wait and see, um, until that tide recedes, until that storm surge recedes, um, obviously we, we can't pump surface water, um, that, that's coming in, uh, from either the Long Island Sound or the Great South Bay, which is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. So, um, you know, very important for us, uh, very important for people to realize, again, uh, that along those coastal areas, you're likely not dealing with rainwater. You're likely dealing with salt water from coastal inundation. And very important, don't try to drive through that. Uh, that will do irreparable damage to your vehicle. Yeah, good advice for sure.
