A day care in Throgs Neck is closed after mold was found inside of the school.
Cynthia Sabella said she dropped her three-year-old daughter off on Friday morning at The Learning Experience on Bruckner Boulevard. She overheard parents talking about mold behind a wall. She said she called the staff, who confirmed.
“I was very disgusted and frustrated,” Sabella said. “I don’t understand why, as her parent, I wasn’t notified.”
She said parents received a notification on Tuesday saying the school was giving classrooms a makeover ahead of the new school year.
Sabella said staff members told her on Friday that mold was discovered on Tuesday.
“I actually asked the school how long they believe they’ve had mold for, and they said that they weren’t sure,” Sabella said.
The mother told News 12 that her daughter went to the school seven hours a day, five days a week.
Now she’s concerned about her child’s health.
“For the past two weeks, she’s been showing some allergy symptoms, allergy-like symptoms,” Sabella said.
The school sent a notice to parents on Friday afternoon saying they were closing out of an abundance of caution and remediation is underway.
“It’s disturbing that they would wait this long to notify us,” Sabella said. “They waited until it blew up.”
The center was already closed by the time News 12 showed up on Friday. News 12 tried to reach the staff by phone and email, and as of Friday night, they have not responded.
