Agreement reached to restore bus service for Bridgeport students
School bus service for students in Bridgeport will be restored this fall, the state Department of Education announced Wednesday.
Bus service will be available for students for the first day of school on Aug. 28.
The department said in a statement that its technical assistance team worked with the district's transportation company to restructure a previous contract to reduce costs while maintaining services.
The district said it was forced to cut bus routes because of budget reductions.
"Through the hard work of our technical assistance team, we were able to help secure a more cost-effective agreement that reduces student walking distances and restores safe, reliable bus service for Bridgeport students. Reliable transportation is essential for attendance, engagement, and student success. I am grateful that, together with the city and the transportation company, we can provide this stability and peace of mind for students and families," said Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker.
Bridgeport School Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery said the agreement showed the power of coming together to put students first.
"Restoring bus services is a direct way of prioritizing our students. This agreement reduces barriers and ensures they are in the classroom every day, ready to learn," he said.
