Following the Bronx Borough president's announcement to cancel Bronx Week 2026, community members are offering ways to keep the celebration going this year.
In a social media video on March 4, Vanessa Gibson cited economic hardships as a reason to pause the festive event that draws large crowds and highlights the best of the borough.
"I don't think that we should pick and choose between basic needs and celebrating culture and history. We should be able to have both," said Executive Director at the Third Avenue Business Improvement District, Pedro Suarez.
Suarez said he was in touch with Gibson before the news broke out about the cancellation. He is not criticizing the borough president but instead wants to offer ways to use local spaces and community resources to still hold the 56th annual celebration.
"It's really about how can we collaborate more intentionally across the borough, make sure that organizations are not working in silos," he said.
Neighbors in Mott Haven were also excited to hear about any possibility to keep the event going. One neighbor on their way to work shared, "That would be beautiful. It would be nice to have that around because we really need it."
In a statement to News 12, Gibson said her office is in communication with the Third Avenue BID, adding in part, "we look forward to continuing conversations around community programming that amplifies and supports our borough."
Suarez said the BID will move forward with scheduled events in and out of the original Bronx Week timeline, leading up to their street festival event in July.
