The Thai community in The Bronx continues to mourn the loss of two people who died in a fire at a temple in Tremont. The fire erupted from a space heater in the Buddhist temple on Anthony Avenue on Wednesday morning. Two of the temple members, including a monk, were killed.

The building currently has a vacate order on it, and on Friday churchgoers came together to help pick up the pieces. “This temple has been around since 1965. This is where the early Thai immigrants came to spend most of their lives here,” said Pam Sudbanthad, the temple community support worker. “It's irreplaceable. But the fact that we are always together makes a big difference. So, we know that we could go on and rebuild what we have left.” The temple says it is currently looking for a new place of worship and a new place to stay for their church leaders who lived there.
