        Prosecutor: Wayne police officer shot sword-wielding person during welfare check

        Wayne police were called to a home on White Birch Court for a welfare check just before 10 p.m.

        An officer-involved shooting occurred in Wayne on Friday, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
        Wayne police were called to a home on White Birch Court for a welfare check just before 10 p.m.
        Police say when officers arrived, they found a suspect armed with two swords. A Wayne officer discharged their firearm and hit the person, according to authorities.
        Officials have not released any information on what led up to the shooting. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Shooting Response Team was activated.
        The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. They are in critical but stable condition.
        The Attorney General Office of Public Integrity and Accountability was informed of the shooting.
