SUNDAY - MONDAY SNOW FORECAST: Six to 12 inches of heavy snow is now expected, with the bulk of the storm being Sunday evening into Monday morning. Snow will blow and drift, with strong wind gusts up to 45 mph. Please plan ahead for significant travel impacts and the chance for power outages.
STORM ALERTS: A winter storm watch is posted for all of Long Island, issued from 6 a.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. There is also a coastal flood watch for moderate coastal flooding around 1.5 to 2.5 feet above ground level from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday.
WHAT CAN STILL CHANGE: Anytime Long Island deals with a strong, nearby coastal storm, any small changes in expected storm track and intensity can significantly alter the forecast. There is a very fine line many times between the heaviest snow and more moderate snow. While confidence increased overall on a storm track closer to Long Island and thus higher local impacts, please continue to follow the News 12 Storm Watch Team updates on-air, online, the News 12 app and social media into the weekend for any changes.
WHAT TO DO NOW: There is enough confidence at this time for you to seriously consider limiting travel Sunday afternoon through Monday and adjusting any plans you have. Whiteout conditions are expected and travel can be nearly impossible at times Sunday night into Monday morning. Make sure snowblowers are prepped if you have them and consider where you will keep your vehicle if you have one as road crews will need as much room to work as possible. Coastal flooding is expected along the coast which means vehicles there should also be moved to higher ground on Sunday. Prepare as you would normally for a major winter storm that can knock out power due to combined heavy snow and strong wind. Make sure to keep devices charged through the storm in case you lose power. Based on the current forecast, also expect widespread impact to schools and all types of travel through at least Monday.
TYPE OF SNOW: With temperatures expected to be in the upper 20s to low 30s, this will be a heavier, wetter snow that can be difficult to manage and cleanup. On top of that, even with strong wind, the snow can stick to and weigh heavier on trees and powerlines, causing potential damage.
BE SAFE! This storm can rival the one from a few weeks ago in terms of impact. The News 12 Storm Watch Team will continue to keep you up to date with the latest information. Please take all warnings strongly and be extremely careful during and after the storm.
