WHAT'S NEW: One mild day today before the cold returns
WHAT'S NEXT: Confidence growing for a major winter storm this weekend

Overview:

Confidence continues to grow that New York City will see a significant winter storm from Sunday into Monday. Forecast models are lining up on a storm track that brings snow into the city, with cold air firmly in place the entire time. While exact snowfall amounts are still being fine-tuned, conditions strongly favor snow rather than rain at least to start, and the snow could be dry and powdery because of the cold. There could be just enough warm air late Sunday for the snow to mix with sleet at times which could hold down accumulations. At this point, the chance of more than 6 inches of snow in NYC is high, and snow may linger into Monday. Details on timing and totals will become clearer over the next few days, but the potential for major impacts is increasing.
In addition to the storm, a long stretch of very cold weather is expected in NYC. After a brief warm-up into the low to mid-40s on Thursday, temperatures will drop sharply late Thursday night and stay below freezing through at least the middle of next week. Highs will mostly be in the 20s, with overnight lows in the teens or even single digits. Wind will make it feel even colder at times, especially late Friday night into Saturday and again early next week. Overall, New York City should prepare for bitter cold and a likely impactful snowstorm to end the weekend.
