Severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. tonight
We have a heat advisory in effect through 8 p.m. today, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees across much of Long Island. An air quality alert is also in effect until 11 p.m. due to elevated ozone levels, which could make it difficult for sensitive groups to spend extended time outdoors. If you're heading outside today, be sure to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Showers and storms wrap up our Friday with humidity dropping heading into the weekend. It won't be completely gone, but not quite as oppressive as our Thursday and Friday were. Tonight, any lingering showers or storms will gradually diminish, with overnight lows settling into the 60s to lower 70s.
The weekend is shaping up very nicely. Saturday brings plenty of sunshine with warm and somewhat humid conditions. High temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s, with a few spots across western Nassau County touching the lower 90s. Saturday night will be partly cloudy and mild, with temperatures holding in the 60s and 70s, making for a comfortable evening if you have outdoor plans.
Sunday starts with sunshine before a few afternoon clouds develop. High temperatures will once again reach the 80s, and most of the daylight hours will remain dry. We'll watch for a few showers and thunderstorms to develop after 6 p.m. Sunday into Monday morning. A few thunderstorms are possible. Overall, it's an excellent beach and boating weekend, but don't forget the sunscreen—the UV index will be high, and with the hot weather and strong June sun, it won't take long to get burned. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend!
