ALERTS: A winter storm warning continues until 1 p.m. Monday. A coastal flood statement for minor overnight coastal flooding is posted, too. This is for closer to midnight.
SNOW TOTALS: The bulk of the snow totals are in the 7- to 11-inch range across Nassau and Suffolk counties. From this point on, accurate snow measurements will be more difficult to get due to the ongoing heavy sleet.
STORM PROGRESSION: This is the most widespread, highest snowfall on Long Island since the January 29, 2022 blizzard. Snow began changing to sleet shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It is very windy, with gusts over 30 mph at times. Scattered power outages will continue to be possible. As temperatures continue to rise through the 20s and eventually into the upper 20s to low 30s, sleet may change to freezing rain and rain. This is all incredibly dangerous as we are now in the storm stage where we add ice on top of the snow on the ground. We now expect the bulk of the storm to wrap up between around 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. from west to east. Spotty snow or mixed showers can occur overnight, but the bulk of the precipitation will be over by then.
DANGEROUS TRAVEL AND CLEANUP: Going forward, the snow will become much more difficult to manage and clean up. Please use extreme caution! This is turning into a heavy cement-like mixture of snow and sleet on the ground. Roads continue to be treacherous, and it is just simply getting more and more dangerous as ice continues to build up on top of the snow. Please let road crews do their jobs and avoid travel as best as you can.
LOOKING AHEAD: While no major additional storms are on the horizon just yet, this snow and ice and tricky travel is not going anywhere all week! Arctic air will be affecting all Long Islanders this week with high temperatures mostly in the 20s and nighttime lows in the single digits to low teens. There will be a few additional periods of snow showers on Monday which can lead to some additional light accumulation on top of the ice and snow on the ground now.
