A major winter storm is expected to hit New York City by Sunday, bringing with it heavy snow rates, intense amounts of snow, and the potential for ice and freezing rain. How much snow? Depending on how much ice and slush tries to mix in, the News 12 Storm Watch Team is tracking the potential for 6 to 12 inches, potentially more if it stays on the powdery, less icy side. Regardless, anticipate major travel woes, including the likelihood for significant delays or cancellations. This will begin late Saturday night and into Sunday morning, continuing throughout Sunday and into the first half of Monday. Saturday is on the quieter side to allow for preparations. Make sure you are stocked up on salt, know where your shovel is, have a plan for how to stay warm and dry, and be vigilant about charging up devices in case there are power problems Sunday and Monday. Sunday morning the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather watch for accumulating snow from Saturday night through Monday morning that could reach totals of up to a foot. This is still an evolving forecast, keep checking back in with the News 12 Storm Watch Team as it will continue to get new information in.
