Light snow blanketed Prospect Heights overnight, transforming Vanderbilt Avenue into a winter wonderland.
Snow-covered trees lined the street as residents shoveled sidewalks, walked their dogs and prepared to enjoy a snow day. Several inches of snow accumulated in the neighborhood, creating scenic views but also slick and slippery road conditions.
Drivers heading out were urged to use caution and allow extra travel time. Some residents said they welcomed the snow, especially those who had the day off from work and planned to spend time outdoors with family.
“We’re happy,” said Michael Klotz, who was out with his children. “I have two kids — they’re 9 and 7, almost 8 — and we’ll do some sledding today. You know, already this is a better winter than 2024, so we’re thrilled to see it.”
Others said the snowfall was modest compared to winters they’ve experienced elsewhere.
“This is nothing, but it’s beautiful,” said Andrea Berne. “I like when it first comes down. I did grow up in a place where we would have feet and feet of snow, so this isn’t too much. It’s wonderful — it’s perfect.”
Residents heading outside were advised to bundle up with boots, hats and gloves as temperatures remained cold throughout the morning. For some, the snowfall carried special meaning.
“So can I tell you — this is my white Christmas,” said Patti Veconi. “My son and his wife are coming to us today. We didn’t get them for Christmas, so we’re getting our white Christmas, and I’m thrilled.”
