A resident credits a smoke detector for alerting her to a basement fire Monday night in Norwalk.

The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. at 26 Stonybrook Road in the basement of a home. Firefighters say it was quickly extinguished, preventing it from spreading to the first floor and beyond.

Officials say one occupant was displaced, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
