Firefighters battled a large barn fire on Sound Avenue in Riverhead Monday afternoon, rescuing baby chicks and other chickens as crews worked to bring the flames under control.
The Riverhead Fire Department said crews responded shortly after 1 p.m. to heavy fire shooting through the roof of a barn located between Wells Farm and Palmer Vineyards. Firefighters from six departments worked for about two hours to contain the fire.
During firefighting efforts, responders removed baby chicks and other chickens from the barn. It remains unclear how many animals were rescued or if any were killed.
No people were inside the barn at the time of the fire, according to fire officials.
Fire crews and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation remained on scene assessing the damage.
