News 12 has obtained video which shows Bridgeport police euthanized a Skunk Friday by shooting it.
Police say they received a call that a skunk was severely injured and unable to move from Pembroke and Cedar streets. They describe the animal's injuries as catastrophic and incompatible with recovery.
Animal Control advised officers that based on the skunk's condition, it should be euthanized.
Police say that according to state law and department policy, officers are authorized to humanely euthanize severely injured wildlife when there is not a "reasonable alternative." They add that the action is only taken following an assessment, with the goal of preventing further suffering to the animal and to ensure public safety.
"We recognize that these situations are difficult for everyone involved. The department remains committed to transparency, humane treatment of animals, and adherence to all legal and ethical standards. We appreciate the community's concern and encourage anyone with questions to contact us directly for further information," a statement from the department said.
