Red Robin can be added to the growing list of restaurants shuttering multiple locations.
It seems like every week another well-known chain announces a store closing. In 2024, there were similar announcements from pharmacies, department stores and restaurants.
Jerika Crane says she patronizes chain restaurants to gather with family and friends.
"This is our go-to store, our go-to spot for Red Robin when we’re at work or at school when we go out with our friends," she says.
Red Robin announced it’s considering closing around 70 underperforming locations, as the burger chain attempts to repay debt. The company expects to close just over a dozen restaurants this year as their leases expire, something finance expert Paul Oster says other businesses have done.
Red Robin isn’t the only restaurant shuttering locations. Last month, Denny’s announced it would be closing more of its low-performing locations than originally anticipated. Last year, the diner chain announced plans to close 50 of its diners, with a total of 150 closures by the end of 2025.
"Auto delinquencies are way up, credit card delinquencies, foreclosures, so all of those things are pointing towards a downturn in consumer spending. And a lot of times, the first thing that they cut out is eating out," Oster said.
The Garden State is home to about a dozen Red Robin restaurants. Neither Red Robin of Denny’s have announced which stores would be on the chopping block.
