President Donald Trump's long threatened tariffs on our border countries have now taken effect. Imports from Mexico and Canada are now to be taxed at 25%. The 10% tariff on Chinese imports will also be doubled to 20%.
There is a large concern if this will trickle down to the customer. Here in the U.S. the largest amount of machinery, cars, and car parts come from Canada and Mexico as well as the products on our supermarket shelves like avocados and meat.
China retaliated imposing additional tariffs of up to 15% on farm imports from the U.S., and Canada's prime minister said he would impose tariffs as well.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has been vocal against the tariffs, later today she will be holding a round table with agriculture leaders and farmers who could be impacted.
