It was an emotional day in court on Thursday for family and friends of a man killed in a hit-and-run.

Prosecutors have identified the victim as 38-year-old Kevin Lawry.

Veronica Marmol, of Queens, is accused of killing him. The 39-year-old is charged with leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death.

"To hit someone and just drive off is crazy,” said Judy Poma, of Bethpage.

Prosecutors say Lawry was walking across Old Country Road Wednesday night in Plainview just before 6 p.m. with a friend when he was hit and thrown onto the hood of her car.

Prosecutors say Marmol did not stop.

Police say Lawry died at the scene and Marmol was found 2 miles away from the crash.

"People just drive like crazy nowadays so that's what I think it is. They're not paying attention on the road and stuff like that's going to happen. I'm sure it wasn't intentional but it's horrible that they left the scene of the accident,” said Bill Andrews, of Bethpage.

In court, the prosecution said Marmol admitted to the police she was in a crash and left because she was scared.

Her defense attorney said in court that this was an unfortunate accident, and the owner of the vehicle was the one who contacted police.

Prosecutors say Marmol has nine prior convictions involving driving, including operating without a license and aggravated operation of a motor vehicle.

"It is a busy road I know this is definitely a road my mom wouldn't want me to cross,” said Adina Neman, of Old Westbury.

No one from either party would speak after court, but a family friend of the victim told News12 earlier in the day that Kevin always helped everyone and just got his commercial driver's license better himself.

The judge set bail for Marmol $75,000 cash or $150,000 bond.

The district attorney's office says she is still in custody.
