Bohemia fire officials responded to a house on Westminster Drive Saturday afternoon where they say the SPCA found multiple dead cats.
Islip Animal Control and the Suffolk SPCA were also at the scene.
“They notified us about cats and dead cats in the dwelling," said Bohemia Fire Department First Assistant Chief Brian Olsen.
Neighbors told News12 one man lives at the home, which they said is always surrounded by cats inside and out.
The fire marshal placed a "keep out" sign on the front door.
“They are at this time condemning the house," Olsen said.
A News 12 crew on the scene observed the homeowner still in the house hours later. He declined to speak with News 12.
Neighbors say cats have roamed the neighborhood for years, often going into other’s backyards and sometimes making their properties smell like ammonia as well.
“I’m 29 years old. I’ve lived here my whole life and we’ve just seen cats coming in and out of the sump over here and at their garage and front door,” said Brandon Gennarelli, a neighbor who lives down the block. “We’ve had a lot of stray cats come in our back and front yards a lot. We don’t really know where they’ve been coming from but the fact that they’re coming in such bulk we kind of assumed that it’s coming from somewhere over here."
As of Saturday night, it was not immediately clear how many cats were in the house or how many were found dead, and no charges were pending.
Additionally, the SPCA had not made any comments.
