An 18-year-old Lake Hiawatha man left the scene of a fatal accident in Toms River Saturday, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says.
Police responded to the area of Route 37 east just before 7:30 p.m. for a crash involving a utility pole.
Officials say a female driver in a white Mercedes sedan crashed into the pole. She and a male passenger were both seriously injured, according to authorities.
The pair were taken to Community Medical Center, where the driver later died. The passenger was then taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and is in critical condition.
An investigation revealed that an Infinity sedan hit the Mercedes on the driver's side, which caused it to crash into the pole. The sedan then left the scene and continued east over the Thomas A. Mathis Bridge, officials say.
At 8 p.m., officers in Seaside Park stopped a vehicle that matched the description of the sedan. They noticed it was heavily damaged on the passenger side and that airbags had been deployed. Police later determined the sedan was the same vehicle involved in the crash.
Officials say Abel Mathukutty was driving the car during both incidents. He was taken into custody and is currently at the Ocean County Jail.
Mathukutty has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing death and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing serious bodily injury.
