A Uniondale man is accused of trying to kill a woman by stabbing her repeatedly in the face, according to police.
Police say 45-year-old Milton Mendez, of Uniondale, and a 39-year-old woman, were arguing inside a house on Salem Road when Mendez allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the woman multiple times in the face.
Police say a 9-year-old tried to stop the attack, but Mendez choked her, then slashed both of her hands.
Police say the 9-year-old and a 17-year-old ran out of the house and called 911.
Responding officers say they could hear the woman's screams from inside the house.
Police say they found Mendez holding a knife, and when they told him to drop it, he did not.
Officers were able to place him under arrest.
Two bloody knives were found in the kitchen.
Neighbors on the block say they're shocked by the incident..
"That's crazy something like that happened so close to my house. I usually don't hear about stuff happening in this neighborhood," said Willie Green, of Uniondale.
Court documents show the 39-year-old needed emergency reconstructive surgery, and that Mendez was previously convicted of driving while intoxicated in 2023.
The Nassau district attorney says Mendez is in custody being held without bail.
