The Bronx precinct seeing spikes in crime is also the target of a pilot program aimed at bringing down those numbers.
Five blocks within the 46th Precinct were identified by city leaders as spots that were driving those spikes, specifically in gun violence.
Since October, all five have been participating in the "Every Block Counts" initiative, which brings teams of city officials from across agencies to those streets to address quality of life issues. Some of the areas they're tackling include getting rid of graffiti, fixing sidewalks, repairing signs and cleanup overall. The goal is to make these neighborhoods more inviting and hopefully safer as a result.
People News 12 spoke to in Fordham told News 12 that they think it’s a good approach, but aren’t necessarily feeling its effects just yet.
Late last year, Mayor Eric Adams said that in the first couple months of the program, all blocks participating hadn’t seen a single shooting since its start. According to NYPD data, the 46th Precinct hasn’t had a shooting so far in the new year.
