Orange County voters are heading to the polls to decide whether longtime County Executive Steve Neuhaus will serve another term or if civil rights attorney Michael Sussman will take over the county’s top seat.
The race, one of the most closely watched in the Hudson Valley, has centered on issues like taxes, transparency in government, economic development and county management.
Republican incumbent Steve Neuhaus is seeking a fourth term, running on his record of lowering county taxes and managing growth. His opponent, Democrat Michael Sussman, says it’s time for new leadership and more transparency in government.
Both candidates issued statements on Election Day.
Neuhaus said, “I feel good and confident with my record. I’ve led this county through crisis and delivered results. “We’re fighting for a more honest, transparent government that puts people first."
Sussman has accused Neuhaus of corruption, pointing to
recent controversies including a no-bid county contract, an FBI investigation and a lawsuit with the Village of South Blooming Grove.
Neuhaus has pushed back, calling Sussman “a defense attorney for murderers and rapists” and noting that Sussman was suspended from practicing law in 2002 — a case Sussman says involved a “technical escrow violation” and no wrongdoing against clients.
Voters told News 12 they’re focused on issues that directly affect their daily lives — especially taxes, jobs, and infrastructure.
“I think we really have to continue to focus on the economic development and not have out-migration of jobs. Good quality paying jobs are really important, and I wish somebody would work on the roads. That would be a nice thing too. I’m tired of potholes,” said Linda Muller of Cornwall.
“Taxes. They’re the main thing,” said Bill Grant of Cornwall.
Other voters said they’re simply looking for honesty and accountability from whoever wins.
“Some integrity. People that you can trust and people who believe in our county,” said Muller.
Polls close at 9 p.m., and News 12 will have live election coverage as results come in.
