The NYPD says officers responding to a 911 call Sunday night in Mott Haven shot a man who approached them with a knife.
Police say it happened around 5:40 p.m. at 335 East 148th St.
Authorities say officers were responding to the call on the second floor about a man who had stolen an air conditioner.
On the scene, police say a 32-year-old man armed with a knife approached officers on the first floor.
The officers asked the man to drop the knife and stop, but he continued to approach the officers with the knife.
Police say then one of the officers opened fire and struck the man in the torso.
The man was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he was in stable as of Sunday night.
The officers were also taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
Police believe the man with the knife could be the original 911 caller.
