Wolfpit Integrated Arts School celebrated National Music in Schools Month with a performance by the Norwalk Symphony woodwind quintet this morning.

Musicians presented their instruments, spotlighting elements of pitch, rhythm and tempo. They demonstrated unique attributes of each instrument.

Officials say music enriches children's learning by incorporating science, technology, engineering, arts and math - also known as STEAM.

"We use a lot of STEAM concepts to teach the kids about the physics of music, the science of music, the math of music. We also use the program to introduce them to the instrument groups of the orchestra, so there are strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion," says Sandra Miklave, executive director of Norwalk Symphony Orchestra. "And we've been able to do the program not only in the libraries but in a lot of the schools and surrounding area."

The symphony's ensembles (strings, woodwinds and brass) will perform at four Norwalk elementary schools this month.

The program is supported through a City of Norwalk Community Engagement Grant.
