As the City of Bridgeport gets ready to sell the old Bassick High School on Clinton Avenue to a developer for $6 million, people who live in the neighborhood say they want to have a voice in the process.

"This is where people are raising their families and it's where our elderly are, so we would love to see this property become a development to enhance our community that we love so dearly," Margaret Judge, president of the Stratfield Historical District Association.

Judge says there was a town meeting this week for residents to hear details of the proposed sale. Chief City Administrator Tom Gaudett says "there's no rush to get this done."

"We want to do this right and make sure every voice is heard," Gaudett said.

Gaudett said the developer plans to turn the property into housing and a community center. But Councilwoman Dasha T. Spell, who represents the district, says she's been pushing to slow the process down.

"We want to make sure that the outcome benefits the whole community, and there's no rush," Spell said.

Judge said there will be a tour of the building this week so residents and city officials can see the inside. A date for the tour has not yet been set.
