Trader Joe's, the California-based grocery chain known for its low-cost bananas, tropical shirt-wearing employees and a growing list of seasonal products will soon open a new location in Woodbridge.
Mayor John McCormac made the announcement toward the end of last week's State of the Township address. He joked during the address that he was saving the best announcement for last.
"In one final piece of news, and perhaps saving the best for last, based on constant requests for this company to move to Woodbridge, there will be a new tenant in the Best Buy shopping center on Route 1 South, across from Woodbridge Center, next to Raymour & Flanigan, the most sought-after American-owned and operated grocery store is finally coming to Woodbridge after we beat out all of our neighboring towns that have been competing to attract it," McCormac said while addressing the Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce. "Yes, we are talking about Trader Joe's coming to Woodbridge."
McCormac did not say when the new store would open. Trader Joe's currently has 19 locations in New Jersey, with the closest stores to Woodbridge being in North Brunswick and Westfield.
During his address, the mayor also announced several other development and redevelopment projects that are in the works in the township including a nearly one million square foot warehouse along the Raritan River near Perth Amboy and a smaller warehouse in Avanel. Projects also include multiple restaurants, a self-storage facility, veterans housing and a new Tim Horton’s Coffee House on Inman Avenue in the Colonia section of Woodbridge.
