It was a little after 3 a.m. on Sept. 22 when a Malverne police officer noticed something wasn’t right.
A man was walking up and down the side streets off Rider Avenue in a “suspicious manner,” the department said.
Authorities say the man told police that he was there to visit his friend’s girlfriend, but didn’t know where she lived.
When one officer was talking to him, a second officer noticed a bag of mail with glue traps (which are known to be used for "mail fishing") in the suspect’s car.
It turns out that the mail had been stolen from USPS boxes in Franklin Square and West Hempstead, Malverne PD said.
Police are not releasing the suspect’s name, but said that he is 20 years old and from the Bronx. He is charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
A sergeant with the Malverne Police Department tells News 12 that the man did not have any mail from Malverne in his possession.
As News 12 has reported, mail thefts have been happening across Long Island.
