A Korean War veteran received a prestigious award in Kings Park Saturday as family, friends and veterans gathered for the event.
Juan Rodriguez served in the 65th Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Borinqueneers." It was the first segregated Hispanic military unit from Puerto Rico.
An emotional Rodriguez shared with News 12 what he remembers most from his time serving the country.
"I still remember all the things that happened in Korea. I remember mostly the people that didn't return. A couple of them were even family," Rodriguez said.
In 2014, President Barack Obama awarded the 65th Infantry Regiment the Borinqueneers Congressional Gold Medal.
Rodriguez received his own gold medal replica at the event on Saturday.
