More than 100 police officers and community members came out to Newark’s North Ironbound neighborhood to honor fallen Detective Joseph Azcona Saturday afternoon. Busy Wilson Avenue and Lafayette Street were shut down for over an hour for the procession, where Azcona was transported to Buyus Funeral Home. Police from Gloucester City to Bayonne and many departments in between drove in their cars and rode their motorcycles to the funeral home, where they stood and saluted in silence. Residents who attended expressed their shock and support. “It just made me feel so sick to my stomach, because I do have family members that are in the law enforcement, and it's just very sad,” said attendee Joanna Yanez. President of the State Police PBA Peter Andreyev called the situation “outrageous” and said it should shock every New Jersey resident. Azcona was 26 years old, killed by a 14-year-old Friday night. The 14-year-old and a second officer who was shot remain in the hospital. Further arrangements were unclear as of Saturday evening.
