A minor is facing numerous charges after a fatal crash Friday night in Ocean County.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 37 and Route 166, right before 11 p.m. Police say a white BMW driving at a high speed crashed into a black Toyota Camry.
There was a large emergency response. The driver and front seat passenger of the Toyota Camry died at the scene. Two backseat passengers were severely injured and transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. They are listed in critical condition.
The driver of the BMW, an unlicensed minor, was uninjured and was detained by police. Two passengers in the BMW were treated and released.
Roads were closed Sunday morning on Route 37 and Route 166, blocking off traffic at the intersection while police investigated.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office say Toms River police officer attempted to stop the speeding car – but ended their pursuit for safety concerns. Officers notified neighboring towns. Seaside Heights police officers tracked the BMW driving at 118 mph.
Before the crash, Toms River units saw the BMW driving fast heading west on Route 37. Officers followed the vehicle from a distance, but did not pursue due to safety reasons.
The driver, a minor, is being charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, assault by auto, causing injury while driving unlicensed and other charges related to the incidents in Toms River, Seaside Heights and Lavallette.
The minor is currently at Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
